The sea lamprey is the largest of the European lampreys, eel-like fish that lack gill covers and have a sucker disk instead of a jawed mouth.


Sea lampreys are most often found dead or dying after returning from the sea and spawning.

Distribution: Kola Peninsula and southern Iceland, south and west (including British Isles) to southern Spain, and east to Italy.
Habitat:
Clean rivers (where estuary pollution and dams do not prevent access). 

Feeding: Attaches to host fish with sucker and digests host's flesh.


Size: Most 50-60cm in length, 2kg weight; exceptionally to 1m.
