Lampren River Lamprey
Eel-like but lacking gill covers and paired fins, and with a sucker disc instead of jaws, the lampern spawns in rivers and goes to sea to feed and grow.
Most usually found dead, in late spring or summer after spawning.
Distribution:
British Isles ( except far north), southern Fenno-Scandia and Baltric States, and most of western Europe east to Slovenia and N Italy.Habitat:
Cleaning undammed streams where the estuary is clean enough for the fish to pass through.Feeding:
Attach to host fish with sucker disc and digest tissues and blood of host.Size:
Average about 30cm long, 60g in weight.Other similer species:
Siberian lamprey(L.japonica) occurs from Kola Peninsula eastwards.

The Shape: Sucker disk with two tooth-plates, front with two blunt cups, rear with 7-10 pointed cups; few small teeth.Golden iris with brown fleckings.
Holes: Line of seven breathing holes along each side.
Color: Uniform olive- or grey- brown above, shading to golden-olive or yellow on sides and white belly.
Fins: All fins are brown and Rear of two well-sparated dorsal fins.
