Red-Throated Loon
Identification :
Gray face and dark red throat; nape striped with black and white lines. Note gradual blending between white front and gray back of the neck.
border between light and dark areas is straight and lacks white triangular indentation seen in Common Loon.
Thin bill appears upturned; fine white spots on back may be visible . IMM: Similar to winter adult, but with grayish flecking on cheek. IMM. plumage kept 1 year.
Feeding:
Feeds by diving underwater and pursuing fish In winter, sometimes seen feeding in small flocks.
Nesting:
Platform nest of grasses, twigs, and mud lined with finer materials, placed at the water's edge. Egg: 1-3, olive -brown with dark marks: I: 24-29 days; F: 45-50 DAYS, precocial; B; 1 .
Other Behavior:
Most loons need a running start of about 20 yd. on the water to take flight. this species can take off in less distance and is the only loon known to be able to take flight from land. During migration, flocks of hundreds may gather on the Great Lakes to feed. the birds migrate during the day in loose flocks.
Habitat:
Summers on tundra lakes and arctic coasts; winters along coasts and in Great Lakes
Voice:
At start and end of winter gives short wailing call; otherwise quiet. Uses a variety of calls on the breeding ground.
